Lift Every Voice and Sing has been referred to as the Black National Anthem. It was written in 1905 by James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson. The lyrics were written to encourage the Black American community. Over the years, many different musical artists have performed it. Here are videos of three different musicians' interpretations of Lift Every Voice and Sing. You can also sing along with me as I sing it.
Message from Mme. Greif: For friends who were at SWS last year: do you remember learning about the sculpture named Lift Every Voice and Sing by Augusta Savage last year in French during our Harlem Renaissance study? Check out the link and re-visit Ms. Savage's artwork while you listen to the song! Augusta Savage fought for social justice and so do we. Augusta Savage also loved her students and so do we! ❤️
